Johan Eriksson

​

Johan Eriksson is Associate Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies at the University of Montana and a Yamaha Performing Artist. Recent projects include tours in Sweden (2018, 2016) with Duo Nyans and jazz guitarist Steve Kovalcheck, and tours in China with the Hemispheres Saxophone Quartet (2017, 2015). Duo Nyans recently released an album of works for saxophone and clarinet (2018). Johan has performed with artists and groups such as the Donny McCaslin Quartet, Greg Gisberg, Matt Wilson, Ron Miles, ‘Blue’ Lou Marini, Lee Konitz, the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, Rockford Symphony Orchestra, Greeley Symphony Orchestra with John Corigliano, Helena Symphony Orchestra, Missoula Symphony Orchestra, and as a soloist with the Butte Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Chamber Singers. Christopher Kirkpatrick

​

Christopher Kirkpatrick is Associate Professor of Clarinet at the University of Montana and a Silverstein Group Artist. He has performed throughout the United States, Sweden, Canada, and Korea and with orchestras such as the Detroit Symphony, Lansing Symphony and the West Michigan Symphony. Recent projects include releasing an album of clarinet and saxophone works with Duo Nyans. Christopher has performed at numerous conferences, including the International Clarinet Association’s Clarinetfest, the North American Saxophone Alliance Conference, the International Double Reed Society Conference, College Music Society Conference, the Brandon University Clarinet Festival and the World Bass Clarinet Congress.  During the summers he is on the faculty of the International Music Camp. He holds degrees from Michigan State University (DMA), the University of New Mexico (MM) and the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga (BM). His teachers have included Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr, Keith Lemmons, Steve Cohen, Ted Gurch and Nikolasa Tejero. Duo Nyans

​

Duo Nyans, with Christopher Kirkpatrick on clarinet and Johan Eriksson on saxophone, is a duo based at the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana.  Formed in 2010, the duo strives to expand and present the current clarinet and saxophone repertoire.  Recent commissions and premieres include works by Emilie LeBel, Simon Hutchinson and Charles Nichols. The duo has performed at numerous conferences including the International Clarinet Association’s Clarinetfest, North American Saxophone Alliance regional and national conferences, Montana/Idaho Clarinet Festival and the Oklahoma State Single Reed Symposium. Their first album, Debut,was recently released. The album includes seven compositions for various combinations of sax and clarinet, with works primarily by living American composers, including the premiere recording of four works. Many university saxophone pedagogues and public school music teachers are required to move between musical genres on a daily basis. Techniques and strategies for fluidly navigating between classical and jazz genres will be discussed and demonstrated in this lecture-recital featuring Johan Eriksson and Christopher Kirkpatrick.
